A Tribal Perspective

“Imagine if we were all to dispose of our own
garbage in our own backyard, how much more
motivated we would be to reduce waste. The
lands of Maniapoto are our backyard and we
have a duty and opportunity to keep them clean.”

This report discusses environmental features of
Maniapoto including endangered species, sacred
sites (and their desecration) and discusses
individual sites of significance. The report also
looks at the threats to the environment in the
Maniapoto region and makes recommendations
for stakeholders.

Maniapoto speaking homes and communities.
These few kaumatua are the last bastions and
repositories of the reo and are windows to a way
of life that can now only be imagined”.

This report does not purport to be a definitive study
of the language structure of Ngāti Maniapoto it is
merely a first hand glimpse and example of the
enormity of the varied form and character of the
language. This is just the beginning and we hope
that this report encourages similar work and that
further volumes will follow.
